Ian Gray, FCIEH
Ian Gray is a Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner, an Associate Member of the Trading Standards Institute and the Principal Policy Officer at the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).
The CIEH has campaigned for over 20 years for protection for workers from secondhand smoke. It is a founder member of the Smokefree Action Alliance; a signatory of the Asthma At Work Charter; the main endorser of the National Clean Air Award, administered by the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, and was represented at the SmokefreeEngland Ministerial Reference Group.
Ian has a long history of involvement in promoting smokefree environments. For many years he worked in the local authority sector managing both regulatory services and health improvement teams. In 1992 he was responsible for the production of a model local authority policy on smoking and tobacco which received ‘The Good Policy in Practice Award’ from ASH and the British Heart Foundation. In 2004 he was the principal author of the Achieving Smoke Freedom Toolkit – A guide for local decision makers which was jointly produced by the CIEH and ASH.
Ian developed and delivered the National Smokefree Legislation Training Programme for England which provided training to some 2000 local authority officers. He was also the principal author of the national guidance for local authorities on implementation of smokefree legislation. He is a member of the Smoking Cessation Programme Development Group of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and an advisor to the Department of Health Tobacco Control National Support Team and to ASH England.
In 2006 the CIEH awarded Ian his Fellowship by Election and in 2007 he received the President’s Award from the Royal Society of Health for excellence in professional practice. |
