Abstract Submissions
 The World Conference on Tobacco OR Health (WCTOH) is happy to announce the opening of its Abstracts submission process. Abstracts will be accepted for oral and / or poster presentations. Abstracts can only be submitted through our online process. Abstract submissions sent by post or via email will not be considered.

Please note that the abstract submission system will close on May 23, 2008, Indian Standard Time (GMT+ 5 hrs 30 mins) and no submissions will be accepted after that date. It is the responsibility of each individual to ensure that their abstract is entered online by the deadline. All abstracts must be submitted using the 14th WCTOH Online Abstract Submission System. Abstract submissions sent by post or via email will not be considered.
Only two abstracts can be submitted per primary author.

Category List |

A “Category List” has been developed to help authors with their abstract subjects. Authors must select one category from this list that best describes the content of their abstract.

Category 1: Burden (Health, Economic, and Epidemiology)
 This category will examine the health, economic, and epidemiologic burden of tobacco use on people, communities, and nations. Topics that will be addressed include discussion of data and other approaches to assess burden and how information can be used to develop and strengthen tobacco control efforts.
Examples:
- International trends in tobacco products use
- The burden of tobacco related diseases
- Impact of tobacco on health, including sub - areas such as reproductive health
- Environmental harms associated with growing tobacco (deforestation, pesticides)
- Child labor
- Tobacco farming, subsidies, alternative crops
- Economic impact of tobacco use
- Poverty and tobacco
- Secondhand smoke: exposure and health and economic impact
- Youth and tobacco

Category 2: Programs, Policy, and Advocacy (Tobacco Control Action) 
This category will examine tactics that can be used to develop and implement programs and further regulate, control, and prevent the use of tobacco products through policies and advocacy.
Examples:
- Tobacco control: issues related to social justice and human rights
- Tobacco product regulation
- Illicit tobacco trade and smuggling
- Role of media and tobacco control
- Counter advertisement and other public education campaigns and programs
- The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control
- Legislation (taxes, advertising bans, clean air, package labeling, etc)
- Litigation
- Implementing and enforcing tobacco control policies
- Tobacco dependence treatment
- Cessation programs and policies
- Healthcare settings and healthcare providers

Category 3: Product and Producer

This category refers to tobacco products and producers. The topics covered span the growing and manufacturing of tobacco products, modes of consumption use, industry marketing, youth programs, regulation, as well as tobacco product pharmacology, pathology, and progression from experimentation to regular use.
Examples:
- Addiction and the different tobacco products
- Biomarkers of tobacco exposure
- The spectrum of tobacco products
- Tobacco industry’s strategies to undermine tobacco control
- Tobacco companies’ front groups, allies and other surrogates, including growers’ associations
- Entertainment industry
- Monitoring tobacco industry’s marketing and promotion strategies

Category 4: Partnerships

This category will examine how partnerships can be used to help support and strengthen tobacco control activities at all levels.
Examples:
- Communicating risk effectively
- Widening the base of tobacco control movement
- Capacity building for tobacco control

Category 5: Resources (Human and Financial) 
This category will examine the resources (both human and financial) needed for effective tobacco control through programs, campaigns, outreach, and policies.
Examples:
- Development of tobacco control programs
- Resources needed
- Evaluation planning
- Networking
- Measuring success
- Establishing targets
- Budgetary restrictions

Keywords |

You will be asked to select four keywords that best describe your abstract presentation. A list of keywords will be provided further along in the abstract submission process. (To view keywords, please click here.)

Abstract Submission Types |

There are three types of abstract submissions:

Oral or Poster
Oral presentations should not be more than 10 minutes in length. Oral abstract presenters will be requested to present their abstracts during an assigned session. Any abstract submitted under this option that is not selected for an oral presentation WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE considered for a poster presentation.

Oral Only
Oral presentations should not be more than10 minutes in length. Oral abstract presenters will be requested to present their abstracts during an assigned session. Any abstract submitted under this option that is not selected for an oral presentation WILL NOT be considered for a poster presentation.

Poster Only
Submissions for poster presentations that will take place in an informal setting. Poster presenters will be requested to be available for discussion of their posters during an assigned poster session. No - shows will be identified and authors may be excluded from submitting abstracts to future WCTOHs.
The poster size will be 4 feet wide by 6 feet high. Please use a large enough font to be read from a distance of 1.5 meters. A professional crew will assist presenters with putting up and taking down posters.

Abstract Format |

The 14th WCTOH will use an electronic process for the submission of abstracts. Primary submitting authors will need internet access and an email address. The secretariat office will communicate with the primary author through the e - mail address that is given at the time of submission. Confirmation emails are automatically sent upon completion of an abstract submission. If authors do not receive a confirmation email, it is up to them to check on the status of their submission with WCTOH.
Simple instructions will be provided at every step of the online submission process. Please note the following:

For standardization, abstracts must not exceed 250 words.

Abstracts need to be structured as follows:
- Title that clearly indicates the subject of the presentation
- Background
- Objectives
- Methods
- Results
- Conclusions
Please proofread your submission. The WCTOH is not responsible for author errors.
*English will be the primary language at the 14th WCTOH. All presentations oral / poster will be in English. An adequate command of English language will be required for those who present at the conference.

Review Process |

Acceptance of all abstracts is subject to a peer-review process. The Abstract Committee along with various ad hoc members will review all abstracts. Authors of the abstracts will be informed of the selection outcome by email to the address they provide on the abstract registration form (located through the abstraction submission site).

Publication |

Abstracts that are accepted will be published in the 14th WCTOH Abstract Cd - ROM that will be given to all participants. Abstracts that are accepted will also be listed online through the 14th WCTOH website prior to the start of the Conference.

Abstract Withdrawal |

To withdraw your abstract, please send an email no later than May 26, 2008 to the Chairman of the Abstracts Committee at, with a copy to the professional conference organizers at . The email subject should state: Abstracts
Abstract Authors are asked to avoid withdrawing after the deadline to withdraw abstracts has lapsed as it is likely to disrupt the program. If the need arises, please make every effort to withdraw your abstract by the withdrawal deadline.

Funding Source |
 All abstract submitters will be asked to affirm the following statement:
“The work presented here was not supported directly or indirectly by the tobacco industry "
|
Scholarships |
 When submitting your abstract, you will have to state whether you are applying for a scholarship. This will not be a factor when reviewing your abstract.
Scholarships are only awarded to applicants who have had an abstract accepted. However, acceptance of your abstract does not guarantee that you will be awarded a scholarship.
