Nurses and Tobacco Control Pre-conference Workshop

Nurses, 13 million strong, can be a powerful force in the global fight against the tobacco epidemic. This special, one-day pre-conference workshop will promote a new global network of nurses in tobacco control to enhance capacity building. Nursing leaders in tobacco control will facilitate discussion of opportunities to enhance nursing involvement in tobacco control. A special focus of the workshop will be strategies for increasing involvement of nurses in tobacco cessation interventions.
Who should attend: Nurses working in all areas of tobacco control and those who are interesting in enhancing nurses’ contribution to address the tobacco epidemic.

Purpose: |
To increase the involvement of nurses in tobacco control, focusing on the nurses’ role in tobacco cessation interventions and using a new global network of nurses to enhance capacity building.
Format: An all day pre-conference workshop on the day before the official opening of the 14th World Conference on Tobacco OR Health. This interactive workshop will include didactic lectures, seminar discussions, and opportunities for networking among nurses involved in tobacco control activities throughout the world. Participants will include nursing experts in tobacco control in India and worldwide along with those nurses who are interested in furthering their knowledge and involvement with tobacco control and cessation. Issues that affect nursing education, research and practice will be addressed. Participants will discuss how a global network of nurses in tobacco control can assist nurses’ worldwide.
Nurses, working in a variety of settings and with clients from all socio-economic and educational levels, have daily contact with tobacco users in clinics, hospitals, schools, etc. Nurses, if provided with knowledge and skills to at least implement a brief cessation intervention, can make a significant difference in the quit attempts rates of the population.
