Scholarship Announcement
 
The 14th WCTOH shines a spotlight on tobacco control in the developing world. The organizers plan to offer a limited number of Scholarships to individuals from low- and middle-income countries. Please refer to the World Bank listing (http://go.worldbank.org/K2CKM78CC0) of country economy classifications.
  • Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis based on eligibility and specific criteria as described below
  • Scholarships will not qualify individuals for attendance to sessions that require exclusive registration

Scholarships may be full or partial. Expenses covered may include:

  • Roundtrip economy airfare from the nearest international airport in the country of residence to Mumbai
  • Accommodation in Mumbai during the Conference (accommodation for scholars will be selected by the Scholarship Committee)
  • Per Diem Expenses
  • Registration subsidy
  • Some scholarships will be limited to registration only and others to registration and accommodations while attending WCTOH

Important Dates:

March 7, 2008: Online applications for scholarships available
May 16, 2008: Last date for Scholarships application
May 16, 2008: Abstracts must also be submitted by this date in order for Scholarship applications to be considered
May 19, 2008: Last date for Scholarships application withdrawal
July 21, 2008: Notification to applicants of the acceptance or rejection of their application
September 1, 2008: Last date for scholars to notify the Scholarship Committee of their acceptance or denial of the scholarship
October 16, 2008: Last date for scholars to register for the conference. Note: No registration will be allowed for scholars post the last date.

Eligibility*

Scholarship Applicants must absolutely:

  • Work in tobacco control or a related field
  • Work or live in a low- or middle-income country for a local organization
  • Have no connections to the tobacco industry
  • Submit an abstract to the Conference by the last date for their SCHOLARSHIP application. This is EARLIER than the Abstract deadline for others. (Please note: The subject matter of the abstract is not a criteria for scholarship selection; however, the acceptance of an abstract would be)
  • Document a specific need for financial assistance
  • Specify whether they or their respective organizations would be able to cover a portion of the expenses

* English is the primary language at the main conference. All presentations oral/poster will be in English. An adequate command of English language is required for those who present at the conference.

Application:

  • Only online scholarship applications will be accepted
  • Application submissions sent by post or via email will not be considered

Final Selection:

  • Applications will be reviewed based on objective criteria by an international committee
  • The committee will maintain geographic and gender balance in making its decisions

**SELECTION DECISIONS OF THE SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE ARE FINAL AND CANNOT BE APPEALED.

Scholarship Application Withdrawal

To withdraw a scholarship application, please send an email no later than May 19, 2008 to . The email subject should state: Scholarships If the withdrawal of a scholarship application affects attendance at the conference, please make sure to withdraw your abstract as well.

Points to remember:

  • All applicants must submit abstracts before submitting scholarship applications
  • Scholarship Applications will be automatically disqualified if an abstract is not submitted by May 16, 2008 or if an abstract is rejected by the Abstract Committee
  • Please ensure the name on the Scholarship Application is the same as on the Abstract form.
